Syrian air defenses 'shoot down 13 of the missiles' fired in hour-long U.S-led attack on three weapons 'research centers' and military bases across Damascus and Homs | 13 April 2018 | Syrian air defenses shot down 13 missiles fired in a U.S.-led attack on the country on Saturday, Syrian state TV said. It said the missiles had been shot down in the Kiswah area south of Damascus, the capital. President Donald Trump said Friday evening in a national address that he ordered precision strikes in Syria in retaliation for Bashar al-Assad's [alleged] 'evil and despicable' poison gas attack that killed up to 75 people last weekend. Speaking from the Diplomatic Reception Room of the White House, the commander-in-chief of the United States said the strikes pummeled targets associated with Assad's chemical weapons capabilities. According to CNN, at least one US Navy warship based in the Red Sea took part in the strikes. US B-1 bombers were also used.

Explosions heard in east Damascus after Trump announces Syria strikes - witnesses | 14 April 2018 | A series of explosions have been seen in Damascus, Reuters reported, citing their own witnesses. Images have started to emerge on social media, apparently showing Syrian air defense systems responding to incoming strikes. A district of Damascus, which houses a scientific research facility, was targeted by strikes carried out by the US, France and Britain, with several large blasts and smoke rising from the eastern side of the capital, witnesses say.
